As the second step in our agility training program, you will learn more about handling
- How to get your dog to run with you (off leash)
- How to get your dog to go ahead of you
- When to call your dog to you
- How to perform basic “crosses” (front, rear, blind)
- How to teach your dog to turn tightly around a piece of equipment
- How to train your dog to change leads, turning away from you
- How to plan the most efficient way to get you and your dog around the course
- And so much more…
… while having a ton of fun!)
This includes a very important, obvious skill: teaching your dog to follow your instructions while off leash.
One beauty of training with hoops and tunnels is the almost stress-free (body stress, that is) nature of running on the flat and going around and through “obstacles” that are really not obstacles. The only physical exertion required is the running – both for the dog and the human. Another important aspect is that we can do this class indoors in a small area, so we’re able to do it year-round. We love climate control.
This class consists of seven lessons, each almost an hour long. Completion of our Foundation for Agility class or approval by the instructors is required to enter this class. Your dog must have basic understanding of a recall (COME!), sit and stay. We will polish those behaviors, so don’t be too worried if you cannot leave your dog and go out of the room, or even 15 feet away. You WILL work on these skills!
Good running shoes will be needed. You won’t be running long stretches, so shoes that help keep you upright when turning will be the best choice.
